Measuring Social Impact

Social Impact - How an activity or project affects a community and the well-being of the people who live there

The 2025 Museum Social Impact in Practice Study (MSIIP) was an initiative led by the American Alliance of Museums and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to assist museums seeking to measure their social impact.

This study format measures the social impact museums have on visitors, including the ability to engage in lifelong learning, increased connection with friends and family, and even improved health outcomes.

The Museum of Us participated in the MSIIP 2025 Study as part of our ongoing commitment to better understand and respond to community needs.

The Museum has engaged in additional surveys to learn more about the experiences, interests, and priorities of our visitors. These insights help Us reflect on how we support our local community and will inform future exhibitions, programming, and community-centered initiatives.

About the Process

Recruitment for the 2025 MSIIP Study took place from December 2024 through March 2025.

Participants in this study visited the Museum three (3) different times between April and August 2025.

Following the three completed visits, participants took a digital survey responding to questions about their experience and based on their their pre- and post-visit feelings.

A Peek at the Report

Visitors of all ages demonstrated change after multiple visits to the Museum of Us. The changes above are all statistically significantly, indicating a measurable difference between the ‘pre’ and ‘post.’ Effect size tells us how big a difference really is, not just whether it exists. The following survey items were the most impactful for respondents by age groups.
